Artist Statement:
Twenty years to the day after my house burned to the ground on October 20th 1991 in the Oakland Hills fire, I traveled alone to Spain and spent a month in solitude, exploring, walking and painting daily.  The small pieces I painted there became the studies for this series of larger studio paintings.

First, I spent a week with my beloved teacher in Mallorca at an art retreat near the coast.  Then, with no language skills in Spanish or Catalan, I stayed for almost 3 weeks in a small apartment in the ancient El Born neighborhood at #14 Banys Vells.  Santa Maria del Mar was at the end of my street and the café in the square in the shadow of the ancient church was where I went for my daily cappuccino and to write.

I visited every Gaudi site, went to the museums, spent time at the beach, and wandered.  The darkness that came into my art during my week in Mallorca escalated during my solitude in Barcelona.  These paintings are influenced by Barcelona and its’ architecture, the Catalan artist Joan Miro, and the darkness of November in Catalunya.

I am grateful for the love and support of my friends and family who helped me get to Spain, and after my return, have remained patient with me, as I have become a hermit and, at times, paint like a fiend.
